Eternal Truths (or... What I’ve Learnt So Far) In No Particular Order
"Sandy! Take things as they be!
That’s 1st rate philosophy!
No use it is to swear and curse –
If things were changed, they might be worse!"
(John Kendrick Bangs, via my grandmother Nelle)
"Praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and sorrow come and go like the wind. To be happy, rest like a giant tree in the midst of them all."
Ask yourself - "What is needed here?" and "What would the most capable person you can imagine do in the same situation?"
Emotions are a good adjunct to life, but make a terrible master.
Don’t stop thinking about a problem until you have at least 3 solutions
Think of the solution, not the problem.
Frustration = unmet expectations. So, to not be frustrated, either meet or change expectations.
Either solve... or accept.
If I have chosen to accept something in my life, milk it for something positive.
Would you rather be right, or experience peace?
I am more than what bothers me.
Truly enlightened beings are those who refuse to allow themselves to be distressed over things that simply are the way they are.
Non-acceptance of what is can be your ego insisting that it’s way is the right way, rather than accepting what might be God’s divine design, which you are unable to perceive in it’s entirety.
“If you understand, things are just the way they are. If you do not understand, things are just the way they are.”
Have respect for the natural unfolding of events.
No-one, and I mean no-one, wants to be told how to live, what to be or how to think i.e. to be dominated.
Conflict cannot survive without your participation.
What else could I be doing now?
Wisdom is avoiding all thought that weakens you.
Say to yourself “That’s my (jealousy, insecurity etc. etc.) story again.”
Your mission is to be love and have love by serving. Use your talents and special interests to fulfil your service with your calling.
You are free to serve whatever you are intuitively drawn to.
Faith in spirit creates a patient knowing that divine design will reveal what the next step along the path of your sacred quest will be.
“Decide for me. I leave it in your hands.” Then, let go and listen.
Work as hard as you can to make the world a better place, but if all your efforts fail, no hard feelings.
Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.
You need to ask yourself: "What do I believe? What do I want to see changed? What can I affect?"
Every year I resolve to be a little less the me I know and leave a little room for the me I could be.
Anyone who wants to write a book should do it.
It matters not if the book is technically perfect,
if anyone has already written a book like it,
or how many people buy it.
Write it because it must be written.
"You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen.
Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still, and solitary.
The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice.
It will roll in ecstasy at your feet."
"Extra pounds and debt do not "creep up" on us, and time does not "slip away" from us. Here's to being wide awake in our lives, and owning our thoughts, feelings and actions. That's what gives us the results we are experiencing."
"The uneducated man blames others;
The partly-educated man blames himself;
The educated man blames no one."
Learn to write your hurts in the sand. Learn to carve your blessings in stone.
Everyone who has ever taken a shower has had an idea. It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it that makes a difference.
You’re not a failure if you don’t make it. You’re a success because you try.
Become one with what you want out of life.
You have to live for something or someone, otherwise life doesn’t make much sense.
From the movie “Innocence”
It’s impossible to be unhappy and grateful at the same time.
When you seek happiness for yourself it will always elude you.
When you seek happiness for others you will find it for yourself.
You are connected to everyone in the universe.
What anyone thinks of me is none of my business.
Choose to “be” rather than accumulate.
Emotionally healthy individuals:
- attempt to enjoy life rather than prove themselves
- accept themselves just because they are alive
- do not measure their intrinsic worth by what others think of them
- feel deeply, act concertedly but tend to regulate their emotions
- take a fair amount of risk; are adventurous but not foolhardy
- give both themselves and others the right to be wrong
- are long-range hedonists
- tend to be more objective, realistic and scientific
- are committed to creative pursuits
- accept that we live in a world of uncertainty
- are flexible in their thinking, open to change
- accept responsibility for their own upsets
- refuse to strive unrealistically for total joy, happiness, or perfection or for total lack of anxiety, depression, self-downing or hostility
The good and the wise lead quiet lives.
Wilderness is therapy.
Everything that happens in life is in divine order and comes with a lesson. Therefore, nothing ever “goes wrong”.
The whole course of things goes to teach us faith.
Do you think I know what I am doing?
That for one breath or half a breath I belong to myself?
As much as a pen knows what it is writing
Or the ball can guess where it is going next.
Relax about your future and simply allow yourself to be propelled in the direction that God has in mind for you.
You make plans, and God laughs.
For this purpose we have been created: to love and to be loved.
Forgive me my nonsense, as I forgive the nonsense of those who think they talk sense. Robert Frost
A favourite story of Wayne Dyer's concerns Carlos Casteneda and his spiritual teacher, the Nagual don Juan Matus. After having been chased by a jaguar in the mountains for several days and being thoroughly convinced that this jaguar was going to tear him limb from limb and eat him as his prey, Casteneda was finally able to escape the fierce beast.
For three days he had lived with horrible fear that he was about to be shredded and devoured by the jaguar. When his teacher asks him about this experience, Casteneda, writing in The Power of Silence , replies:
What had remained with me in my normal state of awareness was that a jaguar had chased us up a mountain, and that don Juan had asked me if I had felt offended by the big cat’s onslaught. I had assured him that it was absurd that I could feel offended, and he had told me I should feel that same way about the onslaughts of my fellow men. I should protect myself, or get out of their way, but without feeling morally wronged.
If a friend is in trouble, don’t annoy him by asking if there is anything you can do. Think up something appropriate and do it.
Edgar Watson Howe
Life is a gift…..live every day as a thank you note.
Marriages often fail because one of the partners stops giving. If both were willing to give 100% to the relationship, there would be more than enough to provide for a successful and happy marriage.
Real giving involves being aware of the needs and wants of others, with no expectation of return or acknowledgment.
A healthy process of maturation allows us to internalise a belief that we are uniquely valuable and gives us a stable sense of a loveable self. This is required in order to be a happy half of a happy, successful couple.
Gordon Livingston, M.D.

I wish you happiness and the causes of happiness
If I think I can, I can
I pass (on letting myself be affected or get involved)
How may I serve?
Will this bring me peace, or will it bring turmoil?
Is my ego or my higher self about to act?
Learn and practice one joke a week

Cut back on “I”

Sometimes you have to behave your way to happiness.
When meeting someone, think “the Christ in me is meeting the Christ in you.”
Defend the absent.
Take emphasis off grades and teach children to pursue their own interests and talents for the purpose of knowing themselves and serving others.
Stifle any and all public tendencies to correct others.
'Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.'
Suggestions for shutting down the inner dialogue:
When going within, use the metaphor of the pebble dropping through the various levels of your mind.
When you notice your mind overly crowded with thoughts, practice not focusing on anything for just a few moments. You want to catch yourself and bring some stillness into the inner chatter.
Focus on your breath or heartbeat as a means to keep your mind from chattering away ceaselessly.
Make an attempt to put your awareness in the space between your thoughts.
In any moment of stress, go within just for a few moments
and allow the pebble to drop, even if it is only a few seconds.
“The first peace, which is most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realise their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its powers, and when they realise that at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, and within each of us.”
Native American, Black Elk

Wokini - A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding (Billy Mills)
1. The Eight lies of Iktumi:
If only I were rich, then I’d be happy
If only I were famous, then I’d be happy
If only I could find the right person to marry, then I’d be happy
If only I had more friends, then I’d be happy
If only I were more attractive, then I’d be happy
If only I weren’t physically handicapped in any way, then I’d be happy
If only someone close to me hadn’t died, then I’d be happy
If only the world were a better place, then I’d be happy
None of these things are true! Work on removing these lies from your life and you’ll find it easier to be happy. You can be happy if you want to be, and the first step is removing the lies of Iktumi from your life.

4. The Secret of Happiness
There are sequences in everything you do
You will use a sequence to make yourself happy
The sequence always works. You will be happy when you are finished
If you think happy thoughts, you will be happy, because you convince your mind that you feel good
The Meditation Exercise (do this three times a day)
1. Find a comfortable place to relax
2. Close your eyes and count from 1-10, exhaling with each number
3. Relax further as the count progresses
4. Once you reach 10, feel the relaxation spread through your body
5. Think of anything that makes you happy. Make it as real as possible
6. Say aloud 10 times, “I am happy”
7. Count from 10-1 and open your eyes
If you do this, you will be happy. If you do it every day, you will find that you are happy all the time. Happiness will be a habitual feeling for you.

Come to know yourself through physical activity. Feel healthier, live longer, dream, and cleanse yourself with regular exercise and you’ll find balance in your life. You’ll be happier as a result.
You must make many decisions in your life. These decisions sometimes call for change.
If there is something in your life that makes you unhappy, you may have to change it.
Change can sometimes be difficult, and takes time, but do not be afraid.
If you follow your heart and think of others, the change will improve your life.
Take the time to think of what makes you unhappy, find what would make you happy, and make the change. It will make you happier in the end.
